Women's Tennis: Yablonskaya Wins Consolation Flight

WINTER PARK, Fla.—Darina Yablonskaya took the ‘B’ flight consolation championship at the Varner Memorial against Florida Southern’s Nora Baertschi 6-3, 6-3 on Sunday.

Yablonskaya was the only Buccaneer in action on the final day of the tournament.

The tournament marks the end of the fall season for the women’s tennis team.

Women's Tennis Yablonskaya Advances In Consolation

WINTER PARK, Fla.—The Barry women’s tennis team continued action at the C.L Varner Memorial Invitational with Darina Yablonskaya advancing to the finals of the singles B flight back draw.

Yablonskaya defeated Palm Beach Atlantic’s Ittersagen 6-2, 6-2. In the singles A flight back draw Juliet Serabian lost to Nova Southeastern’s Porizkova 6-3, 6-0.

In doubles action the Barry duo of Fiocca/Yablonskaya defeated the Rollins team of Taje/Tkach 8-5. Fiocca/Yablonskaya then lost in the semifinals to O’Neill/Howlett from Hillsborough 9-7.

Yablonskaya will compete for the consolation championship tomorrow starting at 8:30 a.m.

Women's Tennis Has Rough Opening At Varner

WINTER PARK, Fla.—The Barry women’s tennis team had a rough day to open the C.L. Varner Invitational on Friday. Three of the four Buccaneer entries fell in the first round and the sole winner was force to retire in round two.

Mia Fiocca defeated Rollins’ Stefanyia Tkach 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 to open the tournament, but had to withdraw afterward.

Juliet Serabian dropped her match to second-seeded Natalie Ramos of Florida Tech 6-2, 6-0 in the “A” flight. She then lost to Nova Southeastern’s Karolina Porizkova 6-3, 6-0 in the back draw.

In the “B” Flight, Mei-Jing Ang fell to AASU’s Alisa Kagukina 6-0, 6-1, while Darina Yablonskaya fell to the Pirates’ Kathleen Henry 6-2, 6-2. Both players did advance to the semifinals of the backdraw with Ang defeating Palm Beach Atlantic’s Amber Braaten 6-4, 6-1 and Yablonskaya topping Florida Southern’s Amanda Carns 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, Fiocca and Yablonskaya defeated Braaten and Jordan Ittersagen of PBA 8-3. They will face Tkach and Clarke Tatje of Rollins in the second round.

Ang and Serabian lost 8-2 to Ramos and Stephanie Dohner from Florida Tech.
