MIAMI SHORES, Fla.— The Barry University men’s basketball opened their 2009-10 season with a win in the Health & Sports Center on Wednesday night, beating Florida Memorial 72-61.
 
The Bucs (1-0) got out to a 9-0 lead as Willie Whitfield, Marvin Davis, Zack Trapp and Tony Dennison chipped in for the points.
 
The Lions (0-3) fought back, going on a 13-8 run to go down 17-13. The Bucs finished the first half strong, scoring 17 more points including two three-pointers by Evan White. The Bucs entered the break up 34-28.
 
The Lions came out hot to start the second half, outscoring the Bucs 7-5 to bring the game within two points, 39-37, with 16:16 remaining in the game on a jumper by Matthew Rolle.
 
But Dennison, Trapp, and White combined for five three-pointers over the next five minutes to help the Bucs to a 54-39 lead with 11:20 remaining as Dennison drained a trey on a fastbreak.
 
The closest the Lions would get was nine points on three occasions, including with 0:10 seconds left, before before Dennison sank two free throws to make the final margin 72-61.
 
For the Bucs, Dennison had 23 points while Trapp and White had 16 apiece. Jeremy Nance led the Lions with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Rolle had 15 points and Giorgio Gramegna added 10.
 
The Buccaneers return to action on Saturday, November 21 at home against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez at 2:00 pm.
