Women's Basketball Slays the Dragons

DAVIE, Fla. –The Barry women’s basketball team stormed from eight points behind to beat the 8-1 Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons 69-63 on Friday at the Cruzin’ Classic in the Don Taft University Center at the campus of Nova Southeastern.

Leading the way for the Buccaneers was sophomore Shanna Suttington with 21 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Also with 21 points was senior Mariesa Greene. Greene chipped in a double-double with 11 rebounds as well. 15 of Greene’s 21 points came in the second half.

The Buccaneer defense held strong forcing 27 turnovers and holding the Dragons to 63 total points. The Dragons average just over 77 points per game this season.

Kisa Duncan’s jumper at the half gave Barry a two point lead going into the locker room at 33-31. At the 18:07 mark Minnesota State’s Angie Jetvig hit a three to give the Dragons the lead in the second half, a lead they would not give up for almost 16:00 minutes. Minnesota State would hold the lead until just over 2:00 minutes to play when Suttington buried a jumper to claim the lead back to Barry. The Buccaneers would never relinquish this lead and extended it to six by the end of the game.

Barry continues its play in the Cruzin’ Classic tomorrow against the University of Central Missouri. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m.; however expect delays due to previous games in the tournament. You can catch the game on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network staring 15:00 minutes before tip-off.
