BOCA RATON, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers jumped out early and ran away late with a 77-45 win over Ave Maria in the 2009 Springhill Suites Women’s Basketball Holiday Classic in the deHoernle Center on the campus of Lynn University on Wednesday.

The Bucs (7-3) jumped out to 7-0 and 22-5 leads in the first half and never looked back. After a cold-shooting performance in the opening round game against Wisconsin Lutheran, the Bucs were on fire from the beginning, hitting 8-of-14 from three-point range in the first half. Five different players connected from beyond the arc, including Tilde Ahlin who hit three.

In the second half, it got wildly out of hand as the Gyrenes (5-6) continued to struggle from the field. The Bucs took a 31-point lead, 66-35, with 7:29 remaining on an Yvonne Houston jumper and the Gyrenes never got any closer. The Bucs’ biggest lead was 35 points, 73-38, with 4:48 left on a free throw by Adrienne Hicks.

Mariesa Greene led the Bucs again with her fourth-straight double-double and seventh of the season. In just 25 minutes, she pumped in 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Ahlin had 11 points and Shanna Suttington added 10 off the bench. Every Barry player who saw time scored at least two points and grabbed at least one rebound.

Sandy Jenkins led the Gyrenes with 13 points and nine rebounds.

The Bucs travel to the MacArthur Center on Saturday, Jan. 2 to face the Eckerd College Tritons as Sunshine State Conference play kicks into full gear. Tipoff is set for 2:00 pm, with the men’s game to follow at 4:00 pm. Both games will be carried live on the Buccaneer Broadcasting network.
