TAMPA, Fla.— In a game with 11 lead changes and 10 ties, the Barry men’s basketball scratched and clawed their way to a 77-75 win over the Tampa Spartans in the Martinez Center on Saturday.

With 0:04.2 seconds left in the game, Barry (12-5, 4-3 SSC) senior Erick Nsangou flew through the lane to connect on a layup that gave the Buccaneers a 77-75 lead. Nsangou led Barry in scoring with 19 points on 7-14 shooting from the field and a perfect 5-5 from the line. He also added four assists and six rebounds.

“Any win on the road in conference is a good win, no matter who you play,” Barry assistant coach Ryan Saunders said. “We came into Tampa and beat a very good team with some solid defensive efforts down the stretch.”

Barry scoring leader Tony Dennison scored only eight but led the team in assists with six. On his worst shooting night of the year, 1-12, Dennison lead the game in free throws made with six. His defensive efforts on one of the league’s leading scores, Rashard Callaway, held Callaway to 30 percent shooting and 12 points.

The Buccaneers posted four players in double digits. In addition to Nsangou’s 19, Willie Whitfield had 15, Zack Trapp had 15, and Marvin Davis had 10. In a dominating performance on the block, Barry out-scored Tampa in the paint 44-24.

Despite an over 50 percent shooting night for Tampa from both the field and from behind the arc, the Buccaneers defense still forced 16 turnovers and collected 20 points from the turnovers.

The next action for Barry is Wednesday, January 27 against Saint Leo. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. with pregame coverage starting directly after the women’s game on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network.
