Season Opening Win for Women's Tennis

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—On a cold and windy afternoon, the Barry women’s tennis team sweeps the doubles matches and wins all but two singles matches on their way to a 7-2 win over #4 NAIA ranked Embry-Riddle on Saturday in the season opener.

Two newcomers, Julie Stas and Barbi Pocza take down the Embry-Riddle’s #1 doubles team 8-6. Freshman Mia Fiocca pairs up with senior Yulia Kashelkina to down ERAU’s #2 doubles team 8-5, and transfer Darina Yablonskaya partnered with junior Angie Werschel in an 8-3 beating to Embry’s #3 team.

In singles play, Pocza, Kashelkina, Caroline Wendling, and Berit Peterson register wins. Pocza downed ERAU’s #1 player Natasa Zoricic 6-0, 6-2. Kashelkina took a 6-4, 6-1 win over Caroline Nilsson. Wendling coasted to beat Julija Stojkovska 6-1, 6-4, and rounding things out, Peterson defeated Sara Abraul from the #6 spot 6-2, 6-1.

The Buccaneers take a short rest and play again on Sunday against Tampa at 10 a.m., at the Buccaneer Tennis center.
