MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry baseball team captured its first game of the season on Tuesday, with a 7-5 win over the St. Thomas Bobcats at Feinbloom Field.
"We played Barry baseball tonight,” head coach Marc Pavao said. “From the start of the game to the finish we constantly put pressure on St. Thomas and we played with confidence.”
The Buccaneers found themselves in an early 2-0 hole in the third inning but rallied scoring one in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth. St. Thomas came back in the seventh inning scoring three runs to cut the Barry lead down to one at 6-5. However, the Buccaneers responded adding an insurance run in the eighth and then Scott Sexton closed out the Bobcats in the ninth earning him his first save of the year.
Manny Pedrozo knock his first home run of the season in fourth and also drew a walk in the game on a 1-3 night. Nick Shaw went 2-5 with an RBI and Yas Gutierrez went 1-5 with two RBIs in a three run fifth inning.
T.J. Mullins took the hump as the starting pitcher for the second time this season and went 6 and a third innings, gave up eight hits, struck out two with two earned runs. Mullins grabbed his first win of the season.
“He did a fantastic job,” Pavao said. “We fed off of him. He pitched fearless, and he was ahead of guys in the count all night. I couldn’t be happier with T.J.'s [Mullins] pitching tonight”
The next game for the Buccaneers is a three game set starting on Saturday against Saint Le. Game one is on Satruday starting at 6:00 p.m. and games two and three are on Sunday starting at 1:00 p.m..
