DECATUR, Ala.—The Barry Buccaneers (10-2) split two games on the final day of the 2010 UAH Charger Chillout, falling 4-3 to Arkansas-Monticello, but rebounding to beat Northern Kentucky 8-2.
In the second game, Paula Mackin (5-0) tossed her first complete-game of the season, striking out a career-high 13, and Brianna Smith went four-for-four with a triple, two runs and an RBI to lead the Bucs over the Norse (2-3).
Barry jumped out in front in the fourth inning when Smith tripled to lead off the inning and Cassy Zamora squeezed her in.
After giving up two runs in the bottom of the inning, the Bucs pushed across three in the fifth. Smith and Kayla Monroy had RBI singles and Taylor Newman dropped down a squeeze bunt.
In the sixth, Amanda Goelz had a two-run triple and scored on an error. Zamora and Grace Collins combined for a run in the seventh. Zamora singled, went to second on a passed ball and stole third. Collins delivered a base hit to center to score the run.
In the first game, the Bucs fell behind the 4-0 after five innings, but mounted a comeback in the last two innings. In the sixth, Tabor walked and Amber Durkin came into run. Goelz followed with a single and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Newman drove in the first run with a ground out and Emma Dunlap drove in pinch runner Julia Chongarlides with a squeeze bunt. Tabor knocked in Collins with a single in the seventh, but was stranded at third.
Smith (5-2) took the loss, tossing a complete game and striking out 10.
The Bucs come back to South Florida to take on Mercyhurst on Thursday, Feb. 25 in a doubleheader at 5:00 pm at Buccaneer Field.

Softball Splits A Pair Of Games At Chillout
DECATUR, Ala.—The Barry Buccaneers split two games at the 2010 UAH Charger Chillout on Saturday, losing 8-0 in six innings to the host Chargers but rebounding to beat the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns 4-3.
In game one, the Chargers scored six runs in the first inning, capped by a three-run homer from Whitney Hawkins. Hawkins (1-0) also tossed six shutout innings to pick up the win. Amanda Goelz had two of the Buccaneers’ five hits.
In game two, the Buccaneers (9-1) rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Suns (6-4) 4-3. In the third inning, Sara Hipson had an RBI single to drive in Stephany Soto and Jessica Tabor followed with a double to plate Hipson to trim the lead to 3-2.
In the fifth, Grace Collins and Hipson had one-out singles. Tabor dropped down a squeeze bunt to score Collins to knot the game at 3-3 and Hipson motored all the way to third. Goelz delivered a sacrifice fly to score Hipson with the game winner.
Paula Mackin (4-0) worked six innings to earn the win, while Brianna Smith closed out the seventh inning to pick up her second save.
The Bucs close the tournament on Sunday against Arkansas-Monticello and Northern Kentucky.
