MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.— The Barry University baseball team put an 18-5 hurting on the St. Thomas Bobcats on Thursday night. The win is the Bucs’ second against the Bobcats this year and puts them on the winning side of the record.

The Bucs (6-5) got out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Nick Shaw, Chris Leon, and Yas Gutierrez all singled. Shaw and Leon were brought in by a Ryan Garcia sacrifice fly and Gutierrez reached home on a Drew Dwelly single.

The Bobcats (6-9) scored in the second inning off an Ozzie Sanchez solo homerun. In the third inning Lance Larimer, Robert Rodriguez and Alvaro Bastos got St. Thomas close, 5-4, scoring on a Rodriguez single, a Victor Madrozo double and a Sanchez hit, respectively.

But the Buccaneer offense was on fire, scoring 15 more runs over the course of the night. Dwelly hit a solo homerun in the third inning. The shot was his second in as many games. Up 14-5 in the ninth, Matt Petty hit a grand slam to give the Bucs the 18-5 win.

Aaron Main earned the win for the Bucs; he is 1-0 on the season. Javi Barros took the loss for St. Thomas.

The Bucs return to action on Sunday, February 28 when they travel to Florida Memorial to take on the Lions at 1:00 pm.
