SAINT LEO, Fla.—The Barry women’s basketball team turn in a big defensive stop with 5.7 seconds to play to secure a 60-57 win on Saturday against the Saint Leo Lions.

Leading the Buccaneers in scoring and rebounding was Mariesa Greene with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Greene posts her 18th double-double of the year in the win. Thompson added 14 points on 5-10 shooting from the field. Suttington posted 12 points and a game-high four assists.

The matinée affair saw nine ties and seven lead changes. Both teams went back and forth in the first half which ended 27-25 to a Buccaneer advantage. The biggest lead of the first half came at the 10:47 mark when Saint Leo’s Brittany Carannante’s three to give the Lions a 15-9 lead. The Buccaneers diminished the Saint Leo lead and took a four-point advantage with 03:10 left in half.

Saint Leo scored the first six points of the second half and took a 29-27 lead just under 02:00 from the start of the half. With 17:44 to play, Tara O’Malley drained a three pointer to give Barry a one point lead. The Buccaneers would never trail for the remainder of the game.

The Bucs extended the lead to nine twice but could never put the Lions away. The game came down to one possession just over a minute left in the game. Saint Leo took possession trailing by one then gave the ball to their senior forward Willonda Windham. Greene came up huge on the block with a defensive stand then hit two free throws to ice the game with 00:05 seconds left to play.

The next game for the Buccaneers is Wednesday in Miami Shores, Fla. at the Health and Sports Center, as the Bucs will have a re-match against the Lions in the quarterfinals of the BlueCross and BlueShield of Florida Sunshine State Conference basketball tournament.
