ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers swept the Flagler Saints in a softball doubleheader at Saints Field on Wednesday, winning game one 6-2 and taking the nightcap 7-5.

In the opener, the Bucs (13-3) scored three runs in the second inning. Taylor Newman walked and Brianna Smith and Cassie Zamora followed with singles to load the bases. Sarah Broeseker squeezed in Newman and Grace Collins followed with a single to plate the other two runs.

Broeseker scored in the fifth inning aided by three errors by the Saints (9-11). In the sixth, Amanda Goelz delivered a two-run double.

Smith (6-3) picked up the win in the circle. She went the distance, allowing just two unearned runs on four hits. She walked eight and struck out nine. Kelly Riddick (6-7) took the loss. She allowed six runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out 11.

In the nightcap, the Bucs pounded out 12 hits including a three-run double from Broeseker and Jessica Tabor’s first homer.

The Bucs got on the board first when Broeseker knocked in Newman with a single in the second inning. But in the bottom of the frame, the Saints scored three on three hits, two walks and a hit batter.

Tabor cut the lead to one with a solo homer, her first of the season, in the third. In the fourth, Broeseker tied the game with an RBI ground out, scoring Zamora who led off the inning with a walk.

Broeseker broke open the game in the fifth. Newman drove in pinch runner Stephany Soto with the go-ahead run. Kayla Monroy singled and Amber Durkin walked to load the bases. Broeseker ripped a shot into left center to clear the bases and put the Bucs up 7-3.

Jessica Bevlin (1-0) worked 5.2 innings in relief of Paula Mackin to earn the win. She allowed two runs on seven hits and four walks, while striking out five. Smith came on in the seventh inning with the go-ahead run at the plate and struck out Brittany Hatem to earn her third save, tying the school record for saves in a season.

The Bucs travel up to Carrollton, Ga., to play in the West Georgia Tournament over the weekend before returning to Miami Shores next week. Check the website at GoBarryBucs.com for a list of games carried live on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network, powered by Stretch Internet.
