MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—In a matchup of teams ranked second in their division, the NCAA Division II Barry Buccaneers swatted the Division III Emory Eagles 8-1 at the Buccaneer Tennis Center on Monday to run their record to 8-0 on the season.
The match was closer than the final score would indicate. All three doubles matches were close and the Eagles (2-3) took one singles and carried two others to third sets.
At the top doubles flight, Barry’s Max Wimmer and Emanuel Fraitzl edged the Eagles’ Dillon Pottish and Chris Goodwin 9-7. The Bucs won the other two doubles by identical scores of 8-5.
In singles, the Bucs dominated at the one, three and four positions. Eleventh-ranked Marco Mokrzycki knocked off #4 Pottish 6-3, 6-1 at the top flight. Fraitzl made short work of Phillip Overdiek 6-0, 6-1 at three, while Wimmer beat Daniel Weingarten 6-3, 6-2 at four.
But the Eagles’ Goodwin, ranked sixth in D-III, shocked Barry’s 15th-ranked Ales Svigelj 6-4, 7-6 (3) at number two for their lone point.
At number five, Barry’s Andrew Sharnov fought back from a first-set tie-break loss to beat Oliver Lopp 6-7 (6), 6-2, 10-8.
Sergio Velez closed out the match with a 6-1, 3-6, 10-2 win over Dylan Wright.
The Bucs face NCAA Division I Georgetown on Tuesday, Mar. 9 then face the seventh-ranked West Florida Argonauts on Wednesday.
