MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers split a non-conference doubleheader with Palm Beach Atlantic winning game one 8-2, but dropping the nightcap 5-3.
In the first game, Jessica Tabor and Amanda Goelz combined to drive in seven runs and Paula Mackin pitched five strong innings to pick up the win for the Bucs (17-7).
Tabor hit a two-run homer, her fifth in the last eight games, in the first inning and added a two-run single in the sixth. Goelz had an RBI double in the third and a two-run single in the fourth. Amber Durkin plated the other run with single in the second. Durkin and Grace Collins each scored twice.
Mackin (9-1) allowed two unearned runs on three hits and five walks, striking out five. Jessica Bevlin came on in the sixth with the Bucs up 6-1 and the bases loaded and worked out of the jam to earn her second save. She struck out two and did not allow a base runner. Ashley Jones (8-5) was tagged with the loss for PBA (14-6). She worked four innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on 11 hits. She walked one and struck out three.
In the second game, the Bucs could not overcome a two-out grand slam by Cassady Faircloth in the fifth inning as the Sailfish won 5-3.
Bevlin (2-4), who did not allow a base runner until two outs in the third, worked 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks. She struck out one.
Heather Laird (5-0) went 5.1 innings for the win. She allowed three runs on six hits and four walks and struck out three. Jones finished up the last 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and striking out one to earn her second save.
The Bucs open Sunshine State Conference play on Friday, Mar. 12 at 6:00 pm against the Florida Tech Panthers, with the doubleheader of the series at 1:00 pm on Saturday. Buccaneer fans can listen to all the action live on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network.
