MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University baseball team used an eight-run first inning to beat the University of Massachusetts-Lowell Riverhawks 17-5 on Wednesday night.
The Bucs (14-7) started the first inning off on the right foot using four walks, two singles, a double, and homerun to earn their first eight runs. Nick Shaw and Drew Dwelly started the inning off with walks followed by a Yas Gutierrez single. Matt Petty hit a double to score Shaw and Dwelly. Later in the inning Jack Valdez blasted a homerun to bring in three runs. Shaw would score once more.
The Riverhawks (10-5) scored two of their own runs in the first off a Buccaneer error and a Cam Kneeland single.
Valdez would hit another homerun in the third for the Buccaneers. Anthony Iglesias and Ryan Garcia hit back-to-back homeruns in the sixth inning to score a total of four runs and pad the Buccaneer lead.
Brad McCallister earned the win for the Bucs with a zero ERA. He moves to 3-3 for the season. Cam Kneeland pitched 0.2 innings and took the loss to move to 0-1 for the season.
The Bucs return to action on Friday, March 19 when they host Eckerd at home at 6:00 pm. On Saturday, the Bucs again take on the Tritons in a doubleheader starting at 12:00, noon.
