Softball Splits SSC Doubleheader With Tritons

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers and Eckerd Tritons split a Sunshine State Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday with the Bucs taking game one 10-0 in five innings and the Tritons getting game two 6-3 in five innings with the game cut short by lightning and rain.

In the opener, Brianna Smith (7-3) tossed a one-hit shutout, striking out six, and also went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI to lead the Bucs to the win.

Smith had RBI doubles in the first and second as the Bucs (21-12, 3-3 SSC) scored three runs in each inning. She added an RBI single in the fifth that gave the Bucs an 8-0 lead. Amanda Goelz, who also drove in three runs, added a two-run homer in the fifth to cap the scoring. Sarah Broeseker added two hits, an RBI single in the first and a run-scoring double in the second.

Mackenzie Dawson (5-10) took the loss for the Tritons (10-18-1, 2-4 SSC). She allowed 10 runs, all earned, on 12 hits and two walks, while striking out one.

In the finale, Alex Sasso (2-2) picked up the win in the circle for t he Tritons. She worked five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, two walks and one strikeout. She also belted a two-run homer in a four-run first inning.

Jessica Bevlin (4-5) took the loss for the Bucs. She allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk in one-plus innings of work.

The Bucs host the Saint Leo Lions next weekend with an single game on Friday and a Saturday doubleheader.
