MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The fifth-ranked Barry Buccaneers brought the NCAA Division III Jumbos of Tufts University down to size, winning 8-1 in women’s tennis on Thursday afternoon at the Buccaneer Tennis Center.
The Bucs (13-2) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in doubles. Angie Werschel and Mia Fiocca routed Janice Lam and Lindsay Katz 8-3 at number two. At the top flight, Julie Stas and Caroline Wendling, playing just their second match together of the season, knocked off the third-ranked combo of Julia Browne and Meghan McCooey 8-4. At the third flight, Barbi Pocza and Darya Yablonskaya completed the sweep with an 8-5 win over Edwina Stewart and Lauren Hollender.
In singles, seventh-ranked Browne gave the Jumbos (2-2) their only point, ripping through Kashelkina 6-1, 6-4. But Wendling put the Bucs back on a roll with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Katz at number three. The Bucs closed out the team match with two wins in quick succession at the bottom of the ladder. Peterson, 6-1, 6-3 over Lam at number five, and Stas, who beat Hollender 6-3, 6-1 at number six, made it 6-1 Barry.
Fiocca outlasted Stewart 6-3, 6-3 at number four in a match that was closer than the score would indicate. Tenth-ranked Werschel was pushed to the edge by #32 McCooey at number two, but rallied to win 7-5, 7-6 (4), after trailing in the second set 5-2.
The Bucs play arch-rival Lynn at the new Perper Tennis Complex in Boca Raton, Fla., on Tuesday, Mar. 30 at 2:00 pm.
