MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers split their Sunshine State Conference softball doubleheaders with the Saint Leo Lions on Saturday, winning game one 7-1 but dropping the second game 1-0.
In the opener, the Lions (18-19, 5-3 SSC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning. But the Bucs (22-14, 4-4 SSC) responded with seven unanswered runs over the next two innings to take the game. Jessica Tabor tied the game win an RBI single in the bottom of the third, then the Bucs sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth. Grace Collins, Amanda Goelz and Cassy Zamora all had RBI singles, while Kayla Monroy, who went 4-for-4, knocked in two runs to cap the frame.
Brianna Smith (8-3) earned the win with five innings of one-run ball. She gave up three hits and a walk and struck out three. Jamie Walker (5-6) took the loss for Saint Leo. In 3.2 innings, she allowed 10 hits, seven runs (three earned), walked one and struck out one.
In the second game, Ashton Whidden (12-7) tossed a four-hit shutout for Saint Leo. Ana Castillo doubled home Elysha Agen in the fifth inning for the only run of the game.
Paula Mackin (10-6) was the hard-luck loser for Barry. She allowed just the one run on six hits, while walking two and striking out nine.
The rubber game of the series was pushed to Sunday, Mar. 28 at 1 pm due to rain on Friday.
