Great Start to a Tough Weekend for Women's Tennis

MONTGOMERY, Ala.—The Barry women’s tennis team defeated #7 Abilene-Christian 7-2 on Wednesday.

Leading the way for the Bucs was #5 Barbi Pocza. Pocza dropped her first set in singles but stormed back taking the last two sets 6-1, 6-0. The #6 doubles team of Pocza and Yulia Kashelkina once again teamed up in doubles to take down Abilene-Christian’s top pair of Jaclyn Walker and Julia Mongin 8-4.

Julie Stas and Caroline Wendling played in the second flight of doubles and dropped to Cassie Carver and Hannah Kelley 9-7. The #20 doubles team of junior Angie Werschel and freshman Mia Fiocca played at the bottom of the doubles lineup and beat Dina Pavlin and Lauren White 8-2.

In singles play #12 Werschel defeated #39 Mongin 6-2, 6-1 at the number two singles spot. #40 Kashelkina defeated Pavlin 6-1, 6-2. At the number four singles, Wendling posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kelly. The only singles loss for the Buccaneers came as Fiocca dropped her match 6-2, 6-2 to Carver. Rounding out singles, Berit Peterson defeated Natalie Friend 6-2, 6-3.

The weekend does not get any easier for the Buccaneers as they face #5 Columbus St. tomorrow and #12 Clayton St. Saturday.
