MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University baseball team used a two-run seventh inning to pull out a 13-12 win over the Nova Southeastern Sharks on Friday evening in the first of a three-game series.
 
In the first inning, the Bucs (24-11, 7-6 SSC) jumped out to a 4-1 lead.  Drew Dwelly, Matt Petty, and Ryan Garcia reached on a double and two walks, respectively. With the bases loaded, Chris Leon jacked a grand slam to drive in the four runs.
 
The Bucs scored five runs in the third inning to take a 9-3 lead, but the Sharks (24-16, 7-6 SSC) scored seven in the fourth with the help of a Luis Penate grand slam and Rhys Roberts' three-run homer.
 
Up 11-10 in the sixth off a Yas Gutierrerz solo homer, the Bucs scored their final two runs in the seventh to take the win.  Evan Ashley reached on a single while Nick Shaw reached on a fielder’s choice as Ashley advanced on an error. Ashley came home on a Dwelly single while Shaw came around on a single by Petty.
 
Brett Hammeker took the win for the Bucs. He moves to 2-0 on the season. Tyler King worked the final 1.1 innings to earn his first save. The teams return to action tomorrow at  noon to wrap up the three-game tilt.
