MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers opened their Sunshine State Conference softball series with a 4-3 win over the Lynn Knights at Buccaneer Field on Tuesday afternoon.
 
The Bucs (27-19, 9-7 SSC) built a 4-0 lead, scoring one in the first, two in the second and one in the fourth, then held on as the Knights (19-24, 3-10 SSC) batted around in the fifth inning and scored three runs.
 
In the first inning, Grace Collins, who went three-for-four, led off with a single and scored on a base hit by Amanda Goelz.
 
In the second inning, pitcher Brianna Smith (11-5) led off with a single and scored on a double by Taylor Newman. Newman came around on a single by Collins to make it 3-0.
 
In the fourth, Kayla Monroy led off with a single, was bunted to second and went to third on a single by Amber Durkin. Collins again cashed in the run with a single to second base.
 
In the fifth, Katrina Lavadan led off with a bunt single and Kathleen Smith drew a walk on a full count off Smith. Smith then nicked Nikki Pallister to load the bases and forced in a run by walking Rachael Larkins, all with no outs. Jessica Bevlin came on a worked out of the jam, though Smith and Pallister both came around to score. Bevlin got Kennedy Lewis looking and then got Brittany Gross, the leading hitter in the conference, to bounce back to the circle to end the inning.
 
Smith, who faced four batters in the fifth, allowed three runs on five hits, walked four and struck out three to pick up her 11th win, tying Paula Mackin for the team lead. Bevlin worked three scoreless innings to pick up her third save, tying Smith for the team lead. She allowed three hits and a walk and struck out one.
 
Cristie Kaufman (11-10) took the loss for Lynn. She allowed three runs in two innings on six hits. Lewis came on to work the final four innings and allowed one run on five hits and a walk and struck out one.
 
The series concludes on Wednesday, Apr. 14 with a doubleheader at 5:00 pm. You can catch all the action on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network if you cannot make it out to the game.
