Baseball Drops Pair To The Tars

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.— On senior day, the Barry baseball team dropped their Sunshine State Conference baseball series to the Rollins Tars, losing game one 18-12 then dropping game two 5-1 on Saturday.

In game one, the Buccaneers took an early four-run lead in the bottom of the second but could not hold on, taking an 18-12 loss. Both offenses exploded in game one with nine different pitchers seeing action between the two teams. The teams surrendered a combined 42 hits and 30 runs.

Nick Shaw led the team in RBI for the second straight game, knocking in four in game one. In the game, Shaw went 3-5 with two doubles and a walk. Yas Gutierrez, who went three-for-four with an RBI, and Joaquin Valdes, who posted a three-for-five game and knocked in a run, also had three hits. 

In the third inning, after Barry tallied four runs in the bottom of the second, Rollins scored six to take a 6-4 lead. In the bottom of the third, Barry answered scoring three to recapture the lead at 7-6 on a three-run home run by Chris Leon.

Both teams posted four runs in the fourth inning. Then in the bottom of five, Barry added one in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 12-10 game in favor of the Bucs. The Tars evaporated the two-run lead, however in the top of the sixth on a  Joey Manning two-run shot to tie the game at 12-12. Rollins then went on to score six more runs in the seventh and eighth innings to finish the game with an 18-12 advantage.

Brett Hammaker took the loss for the Buccaneers, after going 3.2 innings and giving up five earned runs on 62 pitches.

In game two, the Bucs struck first in the bottom of the first after Shaw reached on a hit by pitched then scored on an RBI single from Gutierrez.

After a scoreless second inning, Rollins took the lead with four runs in the third capped by a two-run homer by Taylor Mager. Rollins added another run in the fifth to take a four-run lead at 5-1.

The next game for the Buccaneers is Monday, April 26, at St. Thomas. The game starts at 6:00 p.m. with pregame coverage starting at 5:50 p.m. on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network.
