MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers closed the 2010 softball season with a doubleheader split against St. Thomas, winning the first game 8-0 in six innings and dropping the nightcap 6-5.

In game one, freshman Kasey Mistishen singled home two runs in the sixth inning to give the Bucs (32-24) a walk-off victory. The hit was the first of her career. Leading 6-0, Mistishen came up with two outs and the bases loaded and drilled a 1-0 pitch into right field, bringing Sara Hipson and Jessica Tabor around to give the Bucs the eight-run cushion.

Senior third baseman Amanda Goelz added three hits, including an RBI single in the fourth. Fellow senior Hipson made Senior Night memorable with an RBI triple and also scored ahead of Mistishen’s hit.

Paula Mackin (13-10) tossed a two-hit shutout with no walks and struck out seven. Nikki Sanchez (3-5) took the loss for the Bobcats (15-24). She allowed six runs (two earned) on eight hits and a walk in four innings.

In the nightcap, Monica Garcia, who had walked and moved around to third on two wild pitches, scored on a passed ball to provide St. Thomas with the winning margin.

The Bobcats  had jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but the Bucs knotted the game at 5-5 in the fifth on the strength of three runs-scoring doubles. Tabor and Hipson both knocked on one each, while Taylor Newman’s drove in a pair and tied the game.

Amanda Heyl (7-7), who allowed the Bucs to tie the game in the fifth, was the recipient of the gift run in the six and got the win. She worked three innings in relief of Gina Guffanti and allowed four runs, all earned, on six hits and a walk. Sanchez closed the game over the last two innings to earn her second save. She did not allow a hit, but walked one and threw only three pitches in the seventh inning as the Bucs went in order.
