SACRAMENTO, Calf.—The Barry varsity 8+ rowing team took a third place finish at the 2010 DII NCAA Women’s Rowing Grand Final on Sunday with a time of 6:51.76.
"It was a really great race," head coach Dave Sanderson said. "We rowed to our max capacity. The crew improved with every race at the regatta and finished with their best."
The Buccaneers 8+ boat competed for a national championship against Mercyhurst, Western Washington, and Seattle Pacific. At the end of the first 500 meters, Barry trailed the lead by a mere 00:00.52 seconds. Ahead of the Bucs was Western Washington and Mercyhurst in the lead.
At the 1000 meter mark, Barry remained in third but fell back to the lead by just over 00:03 seconds with Mercyhurst in first and Western Washington in second. With 500 meters to go, the Buccaneers still held third place.
At the finish was Mercyhurst in first with a blazing time of 6:42.53, Western Washington in second at 6:44.92, Barry in third, and Seattle Pacific in fourth with a time of 6:53.04.
Racing for the Buccaneers was cox-Grace Horwitz, stroke-Kelly Harrison, 7-Vanessa Viadero, 6-Rebekah Evans, 5-Brielle Bowers, 4-Jaimee Lampard, 3-Katie Rogers, 2-Summerlin Knipe, and bow-Nicki Marek. The Buccaneers return six of the nine for next season’s competition.

The varsity 8+ crew finished the year with nine first place finishes, including wining the Sunshine State Conference Championship, a second place finish a the Dad Vail Championship, and a third place finish at the SIRA Championship.

After the first 500 meters, the Bucs held a solid 00:03 second lead with Seattle Pacific in second. At the half-way point, Barry still led the race with a time of 3:23.45.
Going into the homestretch, the final 500 meters, the Buccaneers still found themselves in first, this time pulling the lead to exactly 00:04 seconds. However, the Bucs could not hold off the Seattle Pacific surge and finished second with a time of 6:56.20.
In the boat for the Bucs was cox-Grace Horwitz, stroke-Kelly Harrison, 7-Vanessa Viadero, 6-Rebekah Evans, 5-Brielle Bowers, 4-Jaimee Lampard, 3-Katie Rogers, 2-Summerlin Knipe, and bow-Nicki Marek.
In Sunday’s grand final, Barry faces defending champion Western Washington, Mercyhurst, and today’s repechage winner, Seattle Pacific.

Rowing Places Second In Their First Heat At NCAA Championship
GOLD RIVER, Calif.—The Barry University rowing team’s varsity 8+ boat earned a second place finish in their heat at the NCAA Rowing Championship on Friday.
The Bucs raced in the second heat of the day against Western Washington University and Philadelphia University. The Bucs finished second in a time of 6:54.84, almost 11 seconds behind winner Western Washington (6:44.81). The Bucs led after the first 500 meters with a 1:39.63 split, however Western Washington rowed the final 1500 meters nearly 12 seconds quicker than the Bucs. Philadelphia took third in a time of 7:01.98.
"There's a reason Western Washington has won the last five championships," head coach Dave Sanderson said. They're a strong team, we just have to learn from this experience and build on it and be ready to race again tomorrow."
With the win, Western Washington automatically qualifies for the grand final on Sunday afternoon. Barry and Philadelphia will earn a second shot at qualifying for the grand final when they compete in the repechage race tomorrow.
In the first heat, Mercyhurst took the win in a time of 6:49.52. Seattle Pacific finished second in a time of 6:53.52 and Florida Tech took third in 7:09.02.
Florida Tech and Seattle Pacific will join the Bucs and Philadelphia in the Division II Eights repechage race tomorrow at 10:30 am PST (1:30 pm EST). The top team from the repechage race will join Western Washington and Mercyhurst in the grand final.
"The top two teams qualify tomorrow and I feel like we have a good shot," added Sanderson. We just have to execute our race and be ready to go."
