Volleyball Opens Season With A 1-1 Day

DAVIE, Fla.— The Barry University volleyball team opened the season with a 1-1 day at the NSU Shark Invitational on Friday. The Bucs won their first game 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-14) over West Alabama, and dropped the second game in four (24-26, 25-19, 25-23, 25-23) to Minnesota-Duluth.
 
In the first game of the day, the Bucs got the 2010 season started in impressive fashion with a 3-0 (25-15,25-16,25-14) win over the West Alabama Tigers.
 
The Bucs (1-1) made short work of the Tigers (2-4), hitting .464 as a team and finishing out the match in 67 minutes. In the third set, the Bucs hit a blistering .607 and had no errors.
 
Julia Teixeira led the way for the Bucs with 12 kills, two service aces and nine digs. Ady Alcantara had nine kills and no errors in 16 swings for a .562 hitting percentage. Senior Stefanie Sveiven added seven kills and four aces. Libby Walter directed the offense with 34 assists. Libero Amie Manke tied Teixeira with nine digs.
 
In their second game of the day, the Bucs took the first set against the fifth-ranked Bulldogs from Minnesota-Duluth. Julia Texeiria had seven kills in the first-set as the Bucs won in extra time,26-24.
 
The Bucs were tough in the final three sets but fell to Minnesota-Duluth in four. For the match, Teixeira finished the match with 23 kills while Lanie Muys had three and Lovissa Johansson had a pair.
 
The Bucs return to action tomorrow when they take on Arkansas Tech at 9:00 am and Christian Brothers at 3:00 pm. To follow the Bucs progress on live stats, click here.
