MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball team moved to 2-0 in conference play on Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 (25-13, 25-22, 17-25, 25-22) win over #22 Saint Leo in the Health & Sports Center.
The Bucs (5-1, 2-0 SSC) overpowered the Lions (5-5, 1-1 SSC) in the first set, winning 25-13. Though the teams were tied at 5-5 in the early going, Barry used runs of 4-0 and 7-0 to take a 16-7 lead. Lovisa Johansson, Ady Alcantara, Lanie Muys, and Julia Teixeira had kills in the runs while Melina Bukinac added an ace. Saint Leo could only scrounge six more points in the game as a Lion attack error gave Barry the first set.
The second set was more evenly matched as both teams were tied 12-12 midway through the set. Saint Leo climbed out to an 18-15 lead, but the Bucs hung in and were only down 22-21 in the later portion of the set. On the next play a Muys kill tied it at 22-22 and a Saint Leo attack error gave the Bucs the 23-22 lead. Set four ended moments later with a Libby Walter kill and a Saint Leo error.
In set three, Saint Leo combined for 12 kills to help them to a 25-17 win.
In set four, the Lions and Bucs were evenly matched as neither team took more than a two point lead until the final portion of the game. Tied at 20-20 late in the game, the Bucs took a three point lead off of an Alcantara kill and two Saint Leo errors. The Lions would score twice more, but Barry ended the game with the help of two final klills by Alcantara and Teixeira.
For the Buccaneers, Teixeira had 16 kills and a pair of aces while Alcantara had 11 kills and three aces. Lanie Muys added 13 kills. Libby Walter had 38 assists while Amie Manke and Alcantara combined for 31 digs.
The Bucs return to action on Tuesday, September 21 when they host the Lynn Knights in the Health & Sports Center at 7:00 pm.
