MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry men’s soccer team suffered their first conference loss of the year in a 1-0 match against the Florida Southern Mocs on Saturday.

The Buccaneers looked to set the tone early as Barry goal Keeper Johnny Rodrigues almost earned his first assist of his career in the 3rd minute. Rodrigues beautifully distributed a ball behind the Florida Southern defense and connected with Kendall Sealy. The Mocs’ keeper left the box and only partially deflected to ball away from the Buccaneer forward. Sealy caroled the ball and blasted a shot at the open. Florida Southern defender Ashley Holmes earned the team save as he blocked the shot from the goal line.

Barry controlled the tempo as well as possession of the ball during much of the first half. The Bucs out-shot Florida southern 6-5 for the first period and earned four corner kicks to the Mocs one. But the half ended in a scoreless tie.

The lone goal of the match came during the 82nd minute when Brad Hunt’s pass found Viktor Bakkioui at the top right of the box. Bakkioui placed a shot in the right upper 90 just past the reach of Rodrigues.

Barry almost tallied an equalizer at the 88:43 mark. The Bucs sent a free kick from mid field toward the box and Joong Kim’s half volley just missed the goal and sailed over the net.

The home loss to the Mocs is Barry’s first since 2000 when they fell 3-2 in double overtime to Florida Southern.

The next game for the Bucs is Tuesday, Oct. 12 at Florida Tech. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
