Men's Basketball Falls In Exhibition To Miami

MIAMI, Fla.— The Barry University men’s basketball team tipped off their 2010-2011 season on Wednesday night against Division I Miami in an exhibition game in the BankUnited Center.
 
The Canes wasted no time getting out to an 18-2 lead as they went 4-8 from beyond the three-point arc and hit all five of their free throws in the first seven minutes.
 
Bryan VanCott ended a 05:13 Buccaneer scoreless streak with 14:11 remaining in the first to bring the score to 25-5. Moments later, Zack Trapp hit the Buccaneer’s second three of the night to put the score at 25-8. The Canes continued to press the Bucs, going on a 12-4 run over the next seven and a half minutes to take a 37-12 lead.
 
The highlight of the first half came with 2:25 remaining when Levon Williams slipped into the lane and dished off to Willie Whitfield, who dunked in the face of Raphael Akpejiori. Yet it wasn’t enough to spark the Bucs who would enter halftime down 52-18.
 
The Bucs were eight for 33 from the floor in the first half compared to the Canes’ 22 for 38. Barry got out rebounded six to 23 in the first half.
 
The Canes opened the second half on a 20-5 run to extend the lead to 72-23 midway through the second half.  The Bucs didn’t score another field goal until 3:54 remaining in the game when Evan White drove the lane and laid the ball in. In the same seven minute time period, the Canes scored 19 points to take a 91-26 lead.
 
Simply overpowered, the Bucs went on to lose 102-33 . Whitfield led the Buccaneers with eight points and three rebounds. Derrick Bolanos had six points while Marvin Davis and Trapp had five apiece.
 
The Bucs return to action in the regular season opener when they take on Florida Memorial in the FIU Classic on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 2:00 pm.
