MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball team picked up a big win (25-19, 25-15, 25-21) over the Florida Southern Mocs (18-8, 8-5) in straight sets on Saturday afternoon. Prior to the match, the Bucs honored the team’s five seniors; Julia Teixeira, Milena Bukinac, Ady Alcantara, Amie Manke, and Stefanie Sveiven.

In the first set, the Bucs (15-5, 10-4) hit a blistering .429 to take the 25-19 win. Barry jumped out to a 10-5 lead with the help of six combined kills by Teixeira, Alcantara, and Bukinac. The Bucs maintained the five-point lead through 15-10 before going on a 6-3 run to take a 21-13 lead. The Bucs and Mocs traded points back and forth through 23-15 at which point Florida Southern took four straight. Yet two Alcantara kills gave the Bucs the final two points and the win in set one.

The teams came out evenly matched in set two as the Mocs and Bucs were tied 6-6 in the early going. The Bucs took the next two points off Alcantara kills and carried the two point lead through 10-8 and 10-12. Florida Southern tied it at 12-12 off a kill and a Buccaneer attack error.

Up 14-12, Bukinac served five-straight service aces to give the Bucs a 19-12 lead. Southern tired to cool Bukinac’s hot hand with two timeouts, to no avail. A Lanie Muys kill gave the Bucs the 20-12 lead, and they coasted to a 25-15 win in set two.

In the third set, Florida Southern came out with steam and took leads of 10-7 and 12-8. Barry took the next five points off of three Bukinac kills, one from Teixeira, and a Moc error to take a 13-12 lead. The teams were tied at 13-13 and 15-15 before Florida Southern took five out of six and a 20-16 lead.

Barry remained resilient, however, taking the next eight points and a 24-20 lead. Teixeria, Muys and Walter had kills in the run. Barry held on, scoring the final point and taking a 25-21 win in set three.

As a team, the buccaneers served 10 total aces, six from Bukinac, two from Muys, and one apiece from Walter and Alcantara. Teixeira had 20 kills while Alcantara had 16. Bukinac and Muys combined for 11. The team accounted for 37 digs and Walter paced the offense with 34 assists.

The Bucs return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to Nova Southeastern to take on the Sharks at 7:00 pm. Buccaneer fans can catch the game live on GameCentral.
