TAMPA, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball team dropped a three-set match to the Tampa Spartans on Saturday afternoon. The game was the Bucs' final regular season game of the season.
In set one the Spartans jumped out to a 5-1 lead. The Bucs, however, took four straight and tied it at 5-5. The Spartans took five of the next six points and a 10-6 lead, yet Barry remained resilient, taking four out of five to get within one point at 11-10. The Bucs stayed within two points through 16-14 when a Danielle Selkridge block gave Tampa the three-point lead, 17-14. Tampa went on to take set one 25-19.
The teams were evenly matched in the opening of the second set before Tampa took seven straight and a 14-5 lead. The Bucs took one back off a Tampa service error, then traded pairs of points back and forth with the Spartans through 18-10. Up 23-14, the Spartans took the final two points and won set two 25-14.
In the third set the teams went back and forth through 4-4 before Tampa took five straight and a 9-4 lead. The Bucs remained within five through 19-14, yet the Spartans proved too much as the Bucs fell 25- in set three.
For the Buccaneers, Lanie Muys and Ady Alcantara had 11 kills apiece. Julia Teixeira had the lone Buccaneer ace while Libby Walter had 27 assists for the Bucs.
With the regular season over, the Bucs now wait to see if they qualify for the South Region Tournament held on November 18-21. The DII Championship selection show will be aired at 10:00 pm on Sunday evening. Buccaneer fans can watch live by visiting NCAA.com.
