MIAMI, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers led the FIU Panthers with 14:49 remaining only to see it slip away in a 69-54 loss at U.S. Century Bank Arena Monday night.
Evan White hit one of two free throws to put Barry up 42-40 with 14:49 to play, but the Panthers (2-0) ran off a stretch of 23-5 over the next 10 minutes to take a 63-47 lead on a layup by Eric Fredrick at the 4:26 mark.
The Bucs (0-2) started out the game on fire, grabbing a 10-2 lead in the first 2:30 minutes. White and Zack Trapp both hit key three-pointers. After the Panthers came back to take a 26-21 lead with 3:47 to go in the first, the Bucs closed the frame on a 14-4 run to go into intermission up 35-30.
White hit a three-pointer out of the halftime, but FIU responded with a 9-1 run to knot the game at 39-39 on a layup by DeJuan Wright, who scored a double-double off the bench with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Trapp led the Bucs with 14 points, while White added 12 and freshman Derrick Bolanos chipped in 10. Frederick led all scorers for FIU with 21. Jeremy Allen had 14 and Phil Gary added 12.
The Bucs play host to 2009 NCAA Division II champs Winona State on Saturday, Nov. 20 in the Health & Sports Center.
