MIAMI SHORES, Fla.— The Barry University men’s basketball team earned their first win of the season on Tuesday night with a 75-58 win over cross-town rival Johnson & Wales in the Health & Sports Center.

Willie Whitfield and Evan White led the way for the Buccaneers. Whitfield posted a double-double with 25 points and 18 rebounds to lead all players. Evan White scored 23 points off the bench off of 4-7 from beyond the arc.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first half and extended the lead to 15-9. The Bucs (1-3) went on a 9-4 run to tie it up at 19-19 with 9:58 left in the first. The teams were evenly matched throughout the remainder of the first half as the Wildcats (2-4) entered halftime up 35-34.

The Bucs struck first in the second half off a Marvin Davis layup to start a 26-13 run to take a 60-48 lead. White nailed three three-pointers down the stretch to continue the Bucs’ offensive dominance in the second half. The Bucs held the Wildcats scoreless for 4:23 to help them to the 75-58 win.

The Buccaneers out-rebounded the Wildcats 42-32. The big difference in the game, however, came off the bench as the Bucs scored 31 bench points while the Johnson & Wales bench was held scoreless.

Marvin Davis added 11 points for the Bucs while Zack Trapp and Vladimir Raymonvil combined for 14.

The Bucs return to action this weekend when they travel to Melbourne to take on Barton and Fayetville State in the Florida Tech Thanksgiving Classic.
