Men's Basketball Falls in Conference Opener

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry men’s basketball team dropped a 73-64 decision to the Tampa Spartans in the conference opener on Saturday in the Health and Sports Center.

For Barry (2-5, 0-1),Evan White led the way for the Bucs with 15 points followed by Zach Trapp and Vladimir Raymonvil with 11. Willie Whitfield added nine points and a game-high six rebounds.

In a back and forth first half with two ties and two lead changes, Barry trailed at the break by one, 27-26.

Tampa (8-0, 1-0) extended the lead to 12 with 15:05 to play and forced a Buccaneer timeout. After the Barry timeout, Trapp buried a three to cut the lead down to nine. Then with 10:34 to play, Derrick Bolanos nailed a shot from behind the arc to make it 52-48. The four point deficit was the closest the Bucs came to the Spartans the rest of the game.

Leading the way for Tampa was 2009-10 all-conference standout Rashad Callaway. Callaway collected 30 points mostly on a 7-11 mark from behind the three point line.

The Bucs take the next couple weeks off for final exams then head to Boca Raton, Fla., to take on Indianapolis in the Courtyard by Marriott Holiday Classic on Saturday, Dec. 18 at 5:00 p.m. Coverage of the game can be heard on the Buccaneer Broadcasting network starting just before tip-off.
