BOCA RATON, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers stampeded the Milligan College Buffalos 71-50 in the opening round of the Courtyard by Marriott Christmas Classic at Lynn University’s deHoernle Center in women’s basketball action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Buccaneers (6-3), playing without starting forward Nadia Tijani who was delayed by the snow in returning from break, got big performances from a trio of guards to post their third straight win and sixth in their last seven games.

Shanna Suttington and Adrienne Hicks both posted double-doubles. Suttington had 19 points and 10 rebounds, in addition to seven assists, while Hicks added 16 points and 11 boards. Yvonne Houston chipped in 17 points and seven rebounds. Glaucia Lehn, making her first start filling in for Tijani, had eight points, five boards and four blocked shots.

The Bucs won the battle of the boards over the bigger Lady Buffs 47-38 and shot 11-of-22 from three-point range.

The game see-sawed back and forth early, but a layup by Suttington with just four minutes gone in the game put the Bucs up 9-7 and they never trailed.

Lehn connected on a fast break at the 9:01 mark of the first half to put the Bucs up 26-15 and they carried a 10-point lead, 34-24 onto the intermission.

In the second half, the Lady Buffs (11-4) cut the lead to eight points, 36-28, on a layup by Heather Mandela at 17:58. But the Bucs responded with the next seven points to go up by 15, 43-28 on a three-pointer by Houston with 13:50 left.

The Bucs used a 10-0 run from 9:08 to 7:14 to build a 21-point lead as Suttington hit a trey and they pushed the lead to as many as 26 before settling for the 21-point win.

Mandela led the Lady Buffs with 15 points, while Alisha Mainer added 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Bucs face the Wilmington Wildcats on Thursday at 4:00 pm in the final game of the tournament.
