TAMPA, Fla.— The Barry University women’s basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 72-69 game against the Tampa Spartans on the road on Saturday evening. The Bucs outscored Tampa 42-34 in the second half, but were unable to walk away with the win.
The Bucs struck first in the first half as Danielle DeBerry hit a layup and Nadia Tijani hit a free throw to give the Bucs a 3-0 lead. The Spartans, however, went on a 33-11 run over the next 12 minutes, working out to a 33-14 lead, their largest of the game.
The Bucs closed out the first half on a 13-4 run to cut into the Spartan lead, and entered halftime down 38-27. DeBerry and Adrienne Hicks each scored four points in the run.
The Bucs came out on fire in the second half, going on an 18-10 run to cut the lead to just three points, 48-45 with 13:07 remaining in the second. Shanna Suttington sank three three-pointers and two layups in the run.
The Bucs’ hot-streak continued over the next three minutes as Suttington hit two more threes, Yvonne Houston hit a jumper and Hicks converted a pair of free throws to put the Bucs on top 50-55.
Tampa, however, remained resilient and used a barrage of offense to retake the lead, 61-59, with 7:24 remaining in the ballgame. The Bucs, hung close, but were unable to tie it up as a last second three-pointer by Suttington missed, and the Bucs lost 72-69.
For the Bucs, Suttington had 24 points. Houston had 13 while DeBerry scored 12. The Bucs return to action at home against Eckerd on Wednesday when they host the Tritons at 5:30 in the Health & Sports Center.
