TAMPA, Fla.— The Barry University men’s basketball team picked up an important SSC-road win on Saturday evening, beating the Tampa Spartans 59-52.
The Spartans jumped out to a seven point lead, 13-6, in the early going of the first half as Anthony Griffis hit a three-pointer with 13:24 remaining in the first.
The Bucs, however, fought back, cutting the lead to three, 18-15, midway through the first off a Willie Whitfield layup in the lane. Tampa worked out to multiple five-point leads but the Bucs stayed strong and entered halftime down only three, 35-23.
The Bucs outscored the Spartans 9-4 to open the second half and took their first lead of the game with 14:04 remaining when Evan White hit a deep three-pointer to put the Bucs on top 41-39.
The Bucs still led by seven, 54-47, with 4:44 remaining when Bartas Visinskis hit a free throw to give Barry their largest lead of the game, 55-47.
Moments later, an Ashton Graham three-pointer followed by a Rashad Callaway layup cut the Bucs lead to three, 55-52, with just 00:49 remaining in the game.
The Spartans, however, were forced to foul, and Vladimir Raymonvil hit four free throws in the final forty seconds to solidify the Bucs 59-52 win.
For the Buccaneers, three players finished with 13 points apiece: Zack Trapp, Evan White, and Marvin Davis. Whitfield scored 10 and grabbed 10 boards for the double-double.
