Softball Wins Two Region Games On Day Two At The Chillout

DECATUR, Ala.—The Barry Buccaneers enjoyed day two at the 2011 UAH Charger Chillout with a pair of south region wins, beating North Alabama 8-4 and Delta State 8-5 in softball action from Wilson Morgan Park on Saturday.

In the opener, Brooke Asher drilled a two-run homer, the first of the season for the Bucs (3-3) and the first of her career, in the fifth inning to lead Barry over the Lions. Alyssa Goldsmith added a two-run single later in the inning.

The Bucs had built a 4-0 lead in the first four innings. Goldsmith had an RBI single to knock in Sarah Broeseker who had drawn a lead-off walk in the first. In the second, Broeseker delivered a two-run triple, scoring Amber Durkin and Stephany Soto. Natalia Ojeda knocked in Durkin in the fourth after she reached on a bunt single.

But the Lions (2-5) stormed back in the in the top of the fifth inning, scoring four runs to tie the game on an RBI double by Emily Barnes.

Jessica Bevlin (2-0) came in to work out of the jam and held the Lions scoreless in the sixth and seventh to earn the win, her first of the season. She allowed just one hit and struck out three in 2.1 innings.

In the second game, Bevlin again picked up the win in relief, working 5.2 scoreless innings and striking out seven.

The middle of the order provided the offense, going 10-for-13 with seven RBI. Goldsmith was five-for-five, scoring three runs and knocking in three. Jessica Tabor was three-for-three and drove in four.

Down 5-4 in the fourth inning, Tabor ripped a two-run double down the leftfield line, scoring Ojeda and Goldsmith. Goldsmith followed with a two-run single in the fifth to plate Grace Collins and Broeseker.

The Bucs, who had scored just six runs in their first four games combined, exploded for eight in both games on Saturday, rapping out 24 hits, including six for extra-bases, in the two games.

The Bucs face the Cotton Blossoms of Arkansas-Monticello at 9:00 am Central and Georgia College at 11:00 am in the final games of the Chillout.
