Men's Basketball Outlasts Sailfish On Senior Night

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University men’s basketball team earned a double-overtime win against the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Wednesday night. Willie Whitfield led the Bucs on senior night with a career-high 29 points to the 95-92 win.
 
The Bucs (9-16) and the Sailfish (11-12) were close throughout much of the first half as Barry led 21-20 with 6:47 remaining. PBA went on a 15-9 run in the final minutes of the first to enter halftime up 35-30.
 
In the second half the Sailfish reached their largest lead of the game, 10, with 5:17 remaining in regulation.  However the Bucs went on a 12-2 run over the next four minutes to tie the game at 66 apiece with 1:00 remaining. Levon Williams had seven points in the run while Zack Trapp added three and Whitfield added two. Both teams hit one more free throw and they ended regulation tied 67-67.
 
In the first overtime PBA jumped out to a 75-71 lead, but the Bucs were again resilient, scoring the final four points of the period to send the game into a second overtime, tied at 75-75.
 
The Bucs used a balance of offense and defense in the second overtime to take the win. Tied 81-81 with 2:55 remaining, the Bucs pushed out to a 90-83 lead. Trapp hit a clutch-three pointer in the run while Williams added a layup and a pair of free throws.
 
PBA, however, cut the lead just two, 91-89, with 00:31 second remaining. The Bucs, however, sank four free throws down the stretch to take the 95-92 win.
 
Whitfield added 16 rebounds to his 29 points to lead the Bucs. Trapp posted his first double-double of the season with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Williams added 18 points in the win.
 
The evening included a celebration four seniors, Whitfield, Trapp, Marvin Davis, and Julian Bendeke. The team returns to action on Saturday when they take on Saint Leo 1t 4:00 pm for their final regular-season game.
