VALDOSTA, Ga.—The Barry University women’s tennis team (5-0) took a regional win over the Valdosta State Blazers (0-5) on Friday afternoon.
In doubles action, the Bucs cleaned house, taking all three matches. The fourth-ranked team of Barbi Pocza and Angie Wershel beat Sarah Braun and Alina Nagel 8-4 at the top spot. At No. 2 doubles, Alex Gwizdoski and Laura Boguet easily beat Nicole Hernandez and Jessica Tuggle 8-1. Olivia Matuszak and Julie Stas wrapped it up for the Bucs with a 8-0 win over Leslie Roberge and Jahyna Pope at #3.
In singles action, the Bucs took all six points for the 9-0 win. Number 14 Pocza blanked Braun 6-0, 6-0 at number one singles. Twenty-third ranked Werschel faired almost as well, beating Nagel 6-2, 6-0 at number two. Akemi Maehama downed Hernandez 6-1, 6-1 in number three singles.
In the lower flights, the Bucs performed equally as well. Gwizdoski beat Tuggle 6-0, 6-0 at #4 singles. Matuszak handed Roberge a 6-0, 6-1 loss at No. 5 singles, and Stas beat Pope 6-1, 6-0 at #6 to wrap it up for the Bucs.
Barry returns to action tomorrow when they face another regional opponent in West Florida at 1:00 pm.
