VALDOSTA, Ga.—In a repeat of last year’s NCAA Division II National Championship match, the Valdosta State Blazers got the better end of the Barry men’s tennis team with a 7-2 win on Friday afternoon.
The Blazers took two of three doubles matches with wins at number one and two. At #1, the second-ranked team of Daniel Dueren and Christian Hansen defeated Max Wimmer and Quentin Vachez 8-4. At number two singles, #3 Philip Pakenbusch and Luis Loeffler downed Emanuel Fraitzl and Marco Mokrzycki 8-4.
The Bucs sole win in doubles came at number three where Sergio Velez and Ollie Lemaitre beat Konstantin Kutschenk and Otto Lenhart 8-5.
In singles action, top-ranked Fraitzl fell 6-4, 6-4 to Pakenbusch. At number two singles Wimmer went down in three sets to Dueren, losing 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. At number three singles, #25 Hansen beat #11 Mokrzycki 6-4, 6-3 in straight sets. At No. 4 singles, Velez fell to Loeffler 6-2, 6-1.
The Bucs split the final two singles pairings. At No. 5, Vachez lost to Kutschenk 6-1, 6-3, while Lemaitre beat Bernard Wallner 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 10-8 at No. 6 singles.
The Bucs return to action tomorrow afternoon for another regional match against West Florida at 1:00 pm.
