LAKELAND, Fla.—The Barry University women’s basketball team lost to top-seeded Florida Southern in the first round of the 2010 Sunshine State Conference Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night. The Bucs led by as many as 13 in the first half, but could not hold off a strong Florida Southern charge down the stretch.

The Bucs started off on a 12-2 run, capped off by a Shanna Suttington three-pointer, as Florida Southern went 1-11 from the floor in the first seven minutes.

Barry continued to press the Mocs, outscoring them 6-5 over the next three minutes to take an 18-7 lead. The Bucs’ largest lead of the game came with 8:53 remaining in the half when Danielle DeBerry hit a jumper to put the Bucs up by 13, 20-7.

Headed into halftime, Barry held an 11point lead, 30-19, with 2:56 remaining before Florida Southern went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to just one, 30-29, as the teams entered half.

The Bucs led throughout the majority of the second half until the 5:55 mark when Taylor Maldonado hit a three-pointer for the Mocs to give them a 51-48 lead. A Maldonado free throw followed by an Emma Cannon layup gave the Florida Southern their largest lead to that point, 54-48.

Kisa Duncan broke a nearly seven minute scoreless drought when she hit a layup with 2:38 remaining in the game to cut Florida Southern’s lead to nine, 59-52.  Southern, was too strong down the stretch, however, outscoring the Bucs 8-2 in the final 2:30 to take the 64-52 win.

For the Bucs, Suttington led the way with 16 points off of 5-12 from the floor. Yvonne Houston had 11 for Barry. Nadia Tijani grabbed 11 rebounds in the loss.
