Softball Drops Doubleheader To Lions

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers watched their 15-game winning come to an end with a doubleheader sweep by the Molloy Lions at Buccaneer Field on Thursday. Molloy took game one 4-1 in eight innings and the nightcap 7-2.

In game one, both teams managed one run in regulation. Molloy (6-4) struck in the second inning on an RBI single by Lauren Alexander. Jessica Tabor’s squeeze bunt tied the game for Barry (18-6) in the fourth.

In the extra frame on the international tie-breaker, the Lions scored twice on Buccaneer errors to take the win.

Brianna Smith’s (8-4) personal eight-game winning streak was also snapped as she lost on the tie-breaker for the second time this season. She allowed three runs (one earned) on nine hits and struck out five. Megan Butterworth (3-2) picked up the win, allowing just the one run on five hits and two walks and struck out seven.

In the second game, the Bucs took a brief 2-0 lead after run-scoring singles in the second inning by Cassy Zamora and Sarah Broeseker.

But the Lions answered back with six runs on two swings of the bat in the next two innings. Haley Calderwood blasted her first homer of the year, a three-run shot, off Barry starter Paula Mackin (7-2) in the third. In the fourth, after Molloy had loaded the bases on a single and two Barry errors, Carla Campagna delivered a three-run double. Molloy added a run in the fifth on a passed ball.

Allison Ryan (1-1) came on in relief of starter Kelley Jansen, who was lifted in the second after throwing five illegal pitches, and worked the final six innings to earn the win. She scattered eight hits and two walks and allowed just one run.

Mackin, who allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks in four innings, took the loss.

The Bucs travel to face the Saint Leo Lions this weekend in Sunshine State Conference play.
