ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—For the first time in school history the Barry baseball team started conference play a perfect 6-0 after the Bucs took game one 20-4 and then game two 9-5 against the Eckerd Tritons in Saturday’s double header.

In game one, the Buccaneers 20 runs came across the entire game as Barry only left two innings without a run crossing the plate.

Corey Witkowski received the starting nod for the Bucs in game one and pitched one of the most efficient games of his career. Witkowski went seven innings on a mere 70 pitches. The junior added two strikeouts with five hits and no earned runs.

The Buccaneer offense provided more than enough runs to support Witkowski. Barry started the first inning tallying one run after Drew Dwelly scored on a double by Chris Leon.

To start the third, Harold Holness reached on a hit by pitch then Dwelly knocked a double to center field to put runners on second and third for Dean Green. Green’s two RBI single to center field made it a 3-0 game. Matt Petty rocketed the first pitch of his at bat over the right field fence to take the score to Barry five and Eckerd zero.

In the fifth Barry collected five runs to make it a 10-0 game. Holness reached on a base hit then scored on a Leon sacrifice fly. Green then collected an RBI on a single to center field scoring Dwelly. Petty blasted a 3-0 pitch for his second home run of the game and his fifth of the season to score Green. Ryan Garcia lifted a solo big fly to left field to finish off the scoring for Barry in the fourth.

Barry added one in the sixth, five in the seventh, two in the eighth and then two more in the ninth and ended the onslaught with a 20-4 victory.

In game two, the Bucs only needed one inning to seal up a victory and the sweep of the Tritons. Jake Wilder took the mound for Eckerd in game two and entered the game with a 0.68 ERA. Dwelly started the game with a single off the glove of Wilder then Leon struck out swinging. Petty doubled to right field and collected an RBI. Adrian English singled to center field and scored Petty. James Young was plugged by Wilder, Evan Ashley walked and Luis Arrizurieta also walked to load the bases for Holness. Holness dropped a two RBI single to center field and put runners on first and second for Dwelly. On a 3-1 count, Dwelly connected on his fifth home run on the season and took the score to 8-0 in favor of the Bucs with only two outs gone in the game.

Eckerd rallied in the second by posting four runs on a grand slam by Wess Hollins to add to their one-run first and cut the Buccaneer lead down to five at 8-5. Barry put one more run on the board in the fourth and ended the game with a 9-5 win.

Brett Hammaker took the win in game two for Barry, improving his record to 4-1 on the season.

Petty went 7-14 in the three-game series with five runs, a double, two home runs, six RBIs and 14 total bases. Leon and Green both collected five RBIs on the series as well.

The next game for Barry is Monday, March 21 at 6:00 p.m. Live coverage can be heard on the Buccaneer Broadcasting Network starting just before the first pitch.
