ST. LEO, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers rapped out 26 hits and scored 17 runs to complete a Sunshine State Conference softball sweep of the Saint Leo Lions on Sunday at University Stadium. The Bucs took the first game 10-6 and the finale 7-1.
In the first game, Brooke Asher and Brianna Smith hit back-to-back homers in the first inning to account for four runs and Asher added a two-run single in the fourth.
The Lions (19-21, 3-6 SSC) took a brief lead in the bottom of the first. Brittany Yates hit a three-run homer and JamieLee Basinger and Ashlee Sismilich added RBI singles to put Saint Leo up 5-4.
Grace Collins tied the game in the second inning with a squeeze bunt single and added an inside-the-park homer in the fifth.
Jessica Bevlin (4-0) worked 6.1 innings in relief of Paula Mackin to earn the win for the Bucs (20-6, 9-0 SSC). She scattered six hits and three walks and allowed just one run.
In the nightcap, Smith (10-4) held the Lions to two hits in a complete game, striking out seven. She also added a key two-run homer in a five-run fifth inning.
After the Lions took a 1-0 lead on an RBI double by Ali Lamb in the second inning, Natalia Ojeda tied the game for the Bucs in the fourth inning, knocking in Smith who had singled.
Asher tacked on the final run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly.
Jamie Walker (2-5) took the loss for Saint Leo. She went 4.1 innings, giving up five runs on nine hits.
The Bucs host the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Tuesday, Mar. 22 starting at 5:00 pm.
