Men's Golf Moves On To NCAA National Championship

DELAND, Fla.—The sixth-ranked Barry University men’s golf team qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament for the third-straight time on Wednesday afternoon by finishing second at the South/Southeast Regional Golf Tournament. The Bucs, who led after the second round, fired a 294 in the third round to finish with a six-over 873 (294-285-294).
 
Daniel Stapff led the way for the Bucs in the third round and the tournament. Stapff fired a 71 in the final round to finish third overall with two-under 214 (73-70-71).
 
Chris Carlin was five strokes behind Stapff. Carlin posted a 74 in the third round and finished tied for seventh place with a 219 (75-70-74).
 
Marcus Segerstrom was third-best finisher for the Buccaneers. Segerstrom finished tied for 34th place overall with a seven-over 223 (77-73-73).
 
Guillermo Pumarol finished tied for 63rd place with a 228 (72-80-76) while Marcelo Huarte rounded out the Buccaneer five. Huarte finished tied for 72nd with a +14 230 (74-72-84).
 
Second-ranked Lynn University took the win. The Knights posted a 288 in the third round to finish in first with an 869 (288-293-288). Barton College, ranked #11, finished in third with an 877 (294-289-294). Seventeenth-ranked Newberry College posted a +15 879 (289-295-295) to finish in fourth. Thirteenth-ranked Columbus State rounded out the top-five. The Cougars finished in fifth with a +21 885 (294-296-295).
 
These five teams will join other regional qualifiers at the 2011 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship in Florence, Alabama on May 16-20. In addition to the top five teams, the top two individuals not on a qualifying team will travel to Florence. In the South/Southeast Regional those two student-athletes are Grant Goforth from Delta State and Jake Murphey from Coker
 
The trip to the NCAA National Finals will be the fifth overall for the Buccaneers. Barry won the National Championship in 2007 and has had success in the past two tournaments. In 2009 the Bucs finished fourth in the country. Last season, Barry had a slow start but rallied to finish fifth overall.

ROUND TWO RESULTS
 
DELAND, Fla.—The Barry University men’s golf team jumped five spots to finish in first after the second round of the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional. The Bucs fired a three-under 285 in the second round to post a total of 579 (294-285).
 
Lynn University is in second with a 581 (288-293), two strokes behind the Bucs. Barton is in third with a 583 (294-289) and Newberry is a stroke off Barton with a 584 (289-295).
 
Daniel Stapff led the way for Barry in the second round. Stapff posted a two-under 70 on the day. He is tied in fifth with a 143 (73-70). Chris Carlin improved his first-round score by five strokes by posting a 70 for the afternoon. Carlin is tied for 10th with a 145 (75-70).
 
Marcelo Huarte is tied for 17th after two rounds with a 146 (74-72). Huarte fired a 72 in the second round. Marcus Segerstrom is is tied for 47th with a 150 (77-73) and Guillermo Pumarol roundeds out the Buccaneer five with a 152 (72-80).
 
The Bucs return to action tomorrow for the final round. Pumarol is the first to tee off at 12:50 pm. Stapff tees off last for the Bucs at 1:30 pm. Fans can follow all the action live at Golf Stat.
 
ROUND ONE RESULTS
 
DELAND, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers sit tied for sixth out of 20 teams at the 2011 NCAA Division II South/Southeast Region Men’s Golf Tournament at the Victoria Hills Golf Club in Deland, Fla., after firing a 294 on the first round.
 
The West Florida Argonauts fired a first-round 285 (-3) to sit in alone in first place. The Lynn Knights are even par at 288 in second-place, while Newberry College is a stroke back at 289 (+1) in third.
 
Belmont Abbey, led by individual co-leader Peter Tarver Jones, is in fourth at 291 (+3) and Delta State (293; +5) rounds out the top five. The Bucs, Columbus State and Barton College are all tied for sixth.
 
Jones is tied atop the individual leader board, along with Richard Gouveia of Lynn, after firing a blistering 67 (-5) on the first round.
 
For the Bucs, Guillermo Pumarol fired an even par 72 to tie for 13th. Daniel Stapff is a stroke back at 73 and tied for 22nd. At two-over-par 74, Marcelo Huarte is tied for 29th. Chris Carlin (75) and Marcus Segerstrom (77) are tied for 44th and 76th respectively.
 
Round two tees off on Tuesday at 8:00 am. The top five teams advance to the national tournament in Muscle Shoals, Ala., at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
