GREENEVILLE, Tenn.– The Barry University men’s soccer team traveled up to Greeneville, Tenn., where they escaped with a 2-1 double overtime victory over the Tusculum Pioneers in the first round of the Stanno Tournament.

In a game where it seemed that the Bucs would be able to control the style of play from the get go, neither team was able to put one through in the first half as they went into the lockerooms knotted up at zero.

The Bucs were able to out-shoot the Pioneers 7-3 in the first half and had several scoring opportunities off of set pieces, but it was Stephen McNeill for the Pioneers who broke the scoreless tie when his shot on goal was deflected by a Buccaneer defender and lifted over the head of Buc keeper Johnny Rodrigues who was caught off his line.

The Buccaneers then seemed to find a little jolt of energy, perhaps playing with more urgency after falling behind and it was a great move by senior forward Mark Anderson inside the six yard box that led to a foul and a penalty kick for the Bucs.

Anderson’s strike on the penalty kick tied the score at 1-1 with less than ten minutes left to play in regulation and for the second time this season forced overtime.

The score remained tied at one after the first extra session but at the four minute mark of the second overtime Anderson connected from about six yards out on the left side, scoring his seventh goal of the season and sending Barry to their third win of the year.

The Buccaneers move to 3-0-0 on the year and have one more game on their road trip in Tennessee.

The Bucs will face off against Carson-Newman before returning home Sunday night. That game will kickoff at 3:00 pm on the campus of Tusculum College. Live statistics and an audio broadcast will be provided through the Barry University athletic website, GOBARRYBUCS.COM.
