ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball team outlasted the UNC-Pembroke Braves 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 31-29, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon to move to 6-0 on the season.
In the first set, the Bucs (6-0) controlled the flow of the game and found themselves up 12-8 and 17-12 midway through. Barry increased their lead to 20-14 with the help of an Alicia Guerrero kill and a number of Brave mistakes. Up 24-17 with the set in reach, the Braves (4-4) took seven-straight points to go down 24-23. The Bucs, however, used a Lanie Muys attack out of the middle for the 25-23 win in the first set.
In set two, Pembroke stormed out to a 12-7 lead and worked out to a 21-14 lead. The Bucs took seven of the next 10 points to go down 24-20, but were unable to hold off the Braves who took set two 25-20.
In the third set, the Bucs worked out to a 14-10 lead with the assistance of kills by Tania Torres, Morgan Howard, Mariana Lisboa, Mima Hajdukovic, and Muys. Pembroke fought back, however, tying the game at 22-22. The Braves held set-point three times, but tied at 29-29, Barry took the win, 31-29, off a Torres kill and a Brave attack error.
In the final set, the Braves went up 13-10 before the Bucs tied it at 14 apiece. The teams were close through the remainder, tied 23-23 late. In the final two plays of the match a Pembroks error and a Howard kill gave the four-set win to Barry.
For the match, Hajdukovic finished with 17 kills while Lisboa had 16; Muys and Howard had nine apiece. The Bucs earned 10 total blocks while Duddleston finished with 17 digs.
The Bucs return to action next weekend when they host Florida Southern on Friday at 7:00 pm and Tampa on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
