TAMPA, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers opened the UT Spartans Invitational with a 3-0 win over Georgia College on Friday night in women’s soccer action from Pepin Stadium at the University of Tampa.

The Bucs (2-3-0) broke the ice with a goal in the 15th minute. Melissa Madrid delivered a corner kick into the box and Sofia Jakobsson tapped it over to Sara Karna for what proved to be the game-winner past Bobcat keeper Annie Stephens.

The Bucs took a hit right as the first half ended as GCSU’s Olivia Holden came in on an ill-advised challenge against Buccaneer keeper Becca Rogers in the final seconds. Holden continued in even after Rogers gained possession, knocking Rogers out of the game and earning a red card, forcing the Bobcats (1-4-0) to play the second half down a player.

The Bucs finally took advantage of the being up a player in the 87th minute. Joanna Stewart crossed a pass into the box and Sarah Wolfer flicked it over to Madrid whose header beat Tyler Cornelius, who had replaced Stephens in goal.

Madrid added another goal with two second left in the game on a pass from Jaksobsson up the middle.

Rogers had four saves in the first half for the Bucs, while Melissa Toledo made one in the second half to preserve the shutout. Stephens had five saves in the first half for GCSU, while Cornelius had four on six shots in the second half.

The Bucs will face off against first-year program Valdosta State on Sunday at noon at Pepin Stadium.
