MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University volleyball team dropped their first match of the season on Friday evening. The Bucs fell in three sets (20-25,19-25, 23-25) to the Florida Southern Mocs.
In the first set, the Mocs (7-3, 2-0 SSC) outhit Barry (6-1, 0-1 SSC) .267 to .094. The teams were close midway through the game, tied 10-10, before the Mocs took seven of 10 points for a 17-13 lead. Florida Southern kept the pressure on, taking the set 25-20.
In the second set, the teams were again tied at 10-10, and later 15-15. Southern took five of six points for a 20-16 lead. The Bucs would score three more with the help of kills by Lanie Muys and Tania Torres, but took the second-set loss 25-19.
In the final set, the Bucs stormed out to a 15-10 lead with the help of kills by Mariana Lisboa, Mima Hajdukovic, Muys, Torres, and Morgan Howard. Southern cut the lead to two at 17-15, and tied the game at 20 apiece off an Erin Callahan kill. The Bucs earned three more points, but it was Florida Southern who took the win in set three, 25-23, and the match.
For the Buccaneers, Lisboa and Torres had 12 kills apiece to lead the Buccaneer hitters. Hajdukovic had 24 assists while Jenna Duddleston led the defense with 14 digs. The Bucs shared eight blocks as a team.
