MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry women’s soccer team shutout the Nova Southeastern Sharks 3-0 at Buccaneer Field Wednesday night.
The Sharks (6-2-1, 1-0-1 SSC) held a 20-8 edge in shots, but could not crack the goal against keeper Melissa Toledo, who posted her second shutout in three starts. Toledo had nine saves to preserve the clean slate.
Melissa Madrid got the Bucs (4-4-0, 1-1-0 SSC) on the scoreboard in the ninth minute after a mistake by Nova keeper Michelle Fuerst. Fuerst came out but could not corral the ball. Madrid took a touch around and shot into the empty net.
The Bucs struck again in the 37th minute. Emma Karp whipped a cross to the far post which again eluded Fuerst and Morgan Garcia was there to tap in the goal.
Karp put the cap on game in the 73rd minute. Madrid slipped a pass through the middle of the Sharks defense and Karp ripped a shot to the far post from 25 yards out.
Nova’s Sierra Lelii had two golden chances, but came away empty. In the seventh minute with the game still scoreless, Toledo came out on a challenge, but failed to get the ball. Lelii took a shot at the net, but Ziena Cline was there to clear the ball out of danger. In the 56th minute, Lelii had the ball at the top of the six-yard box and an empty net in front of her and popped it over the crossbar.
The Bucs travel to Florida Southern in Lakeland, Fla., on Saturday, Oct. 1 to face the Moccasins at Barnett Field at 7:00 pm.
