CARROLLTON, Ga.—The Barry University volleyball team dropped a five-set heartbreaker to the West Georgia Wolves on Friday night in their first game of the GSC-SSC Crossover. The Bucs fell 26-24, 22-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-13).
In the first set, the Wolves needed extra time to finish the Bucs. Tied at 23-23 late in the game, the Bucs and Wolves traded a point each to go to 24 apiece. West Georgia, however, took the final two points off a Buccaneer attack error and a Mary Krueger kill.
In the second set, the teams were tied 9-9 before the Bucs took a 17-13 lead with the help of kills by Tania Torres, Morgan Howard, and Alicia Guerrero. The Wolves got within a point at 23-22, but Barry held on to take the set two win, 25-22.
In set three the teams were tied at 15 apiece midway through and later at 19-19. The Bucs, however, used a 6-1 run to capitalize and take the set three win 25-20. Jenna Duddleston earned an ace in the run while Torres and Lanie muys had kills.
The fourth set saw the Wolves work out to a 16-10 lead. Barry got as close as two multiple times, but were unable to take the win in set four, falling 25-21.
Set five was a back-and-forth battle as there was five lead changes and five ties. The Bucs held on to a 13-13 tie, but the Wolves took the final two points for the 15-13 win.
